Custom handles, the detail that makes the difference

Custom handles, the detail that makes the difference

Custom handles are an integral part of JOA's design language. Far from being simple functional accessories, they are conceived as full-fledged elements of each project — capable, on their own, of defining a piece of furniture's character and making it immediately recognizable.
At JOA, we offer two approaches to custom handles, depending on the style and requirements of each project. Our signature brass handles are designed specifically by and for JOA. Available in vertical or rounded-edge versions, they are produced exclusively for our projects and constitute a true identity marker. Their golden hues, manufacturing quality, and meticulous design transform each piece of furniture into a unique and recognizable item — the finishing touch that distinguishes a JOA creation. Our handles machined from solid material are crafted directly into the solid wood or steel furniture. This more minimalist approach offers a discreet grip while preserving the continuity of lines and the purity of the design. No visible screws, no visible joints: the furniture remains a single piece, visually and physically. This approach is suited for projects where discretion and formal rigor take precedence over the enhancement of decorative detail. At JOA, the choice of custom handles is made from the design phase, in coherence with the material, proportions, and overall style of the furniture. We guide you in this decision to guarantee perfect harmony between the handle and the entire project — whether it’s a dressing room, a kitchen, a bookcase, or a bathroom vanity manufactured in our Belgian workshop.

Frequently asked questions about custom handles

Frequently asked questions about custom handles

What is the difference between a brass handle and a handle machined directly into the material? +

These are two distinct design philosophies. The custom brass handle is an added element that asserts its presence: it punctuates the furniture with a golden and refined detail, identifiable as a JOA signature. The handle machined directly into the material, on the other hand, disappears into the furniture: the cut is integrated directly into the wood or steel, without an attached piece. The choice between the two depends on the desired style — assertive and warm on one side, minimalist and streamlined on the other.

Are JOA brass handles exclusive to your creations? +

Yes. Our signature brass handles are designed specifically for JOA. They are not commercially available and can only be found on our custom-made furniture. This is a deliberate choice: we want every JOA creation to be recognizable and unique, down to its smallest details. These handles are manufactured to our specifications and, like our materials, are an integral part of our creative identity.

Is the handle machined directly into the material suitable for all types of furniture? +

It is particularly well-suited for furniture with a clean and contemporary design, where one wishes to avoid any protruding or decorative elements. It is frequently found on kitchen fronts, wardrobes, or bookshelves where straight lines and surface continuity are priorities. In contrast, for more imposing pieces or in interiors with a more assertive style, the custom brass handle will bring more character and visual warmth.

Will the brass on the handles oxidize over time? +

Brass naturally evolves over time by developing a patina that enhances its authenticity. Depending on usage and maintenance, its golden hues can deepen and warm slightly. If you wish to preserve its original luster, regular cleaning with a soft cloth and a suitable brass product will easily achieve this. If you prefer to let the material live, the natural patina that forms makes each handle absolutely unique — consistent with the JOA approach that values the authenticity of materials.

Can the handles be customized according to one's project? +

Absolutely. The choice of handle is an integral part of the JOA design process. We present you with the available options — vertical signature brass handles, rounded-edge handles, or handles machined directly into the material — and guide you toward the one that best integrates with your overall project. Dimensions, positioning, and finish are always adapted to the proportions of your furniture to ensure a coherent and harmonious result.
