Custom made Brussels dressing room

History of a custom-made dressing project

Maud and Laurent live in a beautiful duplex apartment in Watermael-Boitsfort.

The couple moved in a few years ago. They decided to buy a maid’s room in the attic when the family grew. As is often the case, as time went by, the furniture accumulated in order to store all the necessities, often prioritizing the comfort of their child over their own. With this and as for many working people, telecommuting has become the new norm. So they got new furniture… as they could.

They have now decided to find their own private space!

Maud loves design, decoration and architecture. She wants a zen, unique interior, especially in the master suite. This custom interior design includes the creation of a beautiful dressing room.

The dressing room in the parents’ bedroom must be completely custom-made. However, we want it to break the codes of the dressing room:

  • Not a silly piece of furniture, not a big massive rectangular volume. A custom-made piece of furniture that plays with the Brussels architecture that we love so much, that recomposes the circulation.
  • A dressing room, or rather two dressing rooms in one, where everyone finds all the options and a comfortable place for his or her things. The furniture must be pleasant and soft, but also unique and original, in short alive (…) It’s a real pleasure project! Beyond the look, the dressing room must optimize circulation and storage. Once fitted out, it must be functional, optimized, ergonomic… In short, a piece of furniture intelligently thought out from its conception.
  • We are very keen to use solid wood, sustainable materials, worked locally in a responsible way. This is also why we work with designers, specialists in custom-made furniture. We attach great importance to our impact on the planet. For us and our boy, the environment is a real family concern.

“A pure JOA project in a typical Brussels architecture. “

In the center of the project, adjacent to the master suite, is a beautiful volume, poorly exploited. It currently houses Maud’s and Laurent’s “dressings” (in reality, racks for hangers and a chest of drawers), but also an ironing corner, many books in boxes… and many other things. Moreover, this room has many architectural features typical of Brussels:

An old chimney in the center of the wall ;

  • a solid wood floor;
  • a room all in length, in enfilade of the room the whole with a very big height under ceiling;
  • moldings;
  • several openings: a large glass door gives access to the room, another door gives access to the corridor while a high radiator is positioned near the bay window;

All of these nooks and crannies make the layout, even custom-made, complex.

After an appointment at the JOA showroom – 352 rue du Noyer in 1030 Schaerbeek – Brussels – the pre-study begins with a discovery of the apartment. The link is created and all the above specifications take shape :

The desires are refined by questioning the uses, the desires and by determining the favorites among the proposals of JOA ;

Measurements were taken with precision;

The first sketches of the space layout are drawn on the fly to support the discussions and invite us to think outside the box.

The more clearly the constraints are defined, the more the creativity of the JOA designers can express itself.

Gradually, the first ideas emerge. Line by line, sketch by sketch, 3D rendering by 3D rendering, their custom-made dressing room project takes shape as they talk to their designer at home, in the showroom or remotely.

Their JOA made-to-measure dressing room is born !

Our designer’s initial concept was a large curved volume: not radical enough for Maud.

But that’s no problem!

Our designer pushes the concept, we think volumes in the volume, personalization and visual uniqueness.

Production and installation : The JOA custom dressing room comes to life

The curve of the dressing room is maintained, but it will be divided in two by a slanted bookcase, exclusively dedicated to Laurent’s comic book collection. Made of solid bamboo, it marks, both in space and in its material, a separation between the two dressing rooms. It participates in the creation of this pleasant arrangement. The bamboo of the furniture and the oak of the floor, both solid, interact. The lines and volumes are based on the particularities of the existing architecture. They draw the circulation, two distinct dressing rooms, a relaxation/concentration space. The points of view, from the accesses and to the use of each part of the creation are studied one by one to embellish still the experience of the daily life.

The dressing rooms do not go up too high, to preserve the molding and the height under ceiling of the beautiful Brussels apartment. Light is led into the room by the curved design of the custom-made white steel doors.

The interior design of each of the two dressing rooms is completely custom-made, with each member of the couple.

Each one decides on their own options and accessories ! For Maud’s dressing room, a corner for her handbags, a part of the rods allowing to hang on hangers her long dresses, a large storage for her shoes “store style”, a full height mirror, a storage corner for seasonal clothes. For Laurent’s dressing room, suits and shirts are in the spotlight, and everything that goes with them: a dedicated storage space for his ties, watches, belts, shoes and… a nice collection of socks, with again, JOA recommendation, a storage corner for seasonal clothes to keep things clear.
