5 good reasons for choosing bamboo furniture

1. Bamboo furniture: Outstanding strength and durability.

Thanks to its stability and resilience, bamboo furniture is an excellent alternative to more traditional woods such as oak or beech, commonly found in Europe. With a density comparable to oak, bamboo performs far better in terms of impact resistance. Its plywood structure also provides extraordinary stability, even with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. This makes it perfectly suited for kitchens or bathrooms without any concerns.

At JOA, we love pushing materials to their limits. For example, in a bookshelf, we might use ultra-thin 16mm panels where 20mm or 30mm would be required in solid oak for the same stability, or 40mm in MDF for equivalent strength.

Imagine the savings in material!

2. Bamboo, an aesthetic made for JOA.

We also work with other wood species in plywood panel form oak, walnut, ash always solid and of the highest quality. These panels offer the advantage of creating interesting stylistic variations.
At JOA, the plywood construction is essential to ensure the strength and stability required, while maintaining a refined, delicate finish. However, the edges of these panels are somewhat “coarser” compared to bamboo, which boasts a beautiful marquetry-like effect. We play with the appearance of these edges as a signature detail in our projects.

At JOA, we love working with curves, and bamboo is ideal for these configurations. Its linear pattern highlights the curve beautifully, whereas the grain of oak can sometimes obscure the effect.

Curves, diagonals, and solid-material milling, which we often use to soften edges and optimize circulation, also allow for graphic plays. The grain of the bamboo layers can be revealed at will, adding precise, intricate details that showcase the craftsmanship behind every JOA creation.

3. A natural, timeless aesthetic

Far from following fleeting trends, JOA focuses on durable creations that you will never tire of. Lovers of raw, natural tones, we do not apply stains to the wood, allowing the full beauty of bamboo to shine through in each piece.

Beyond aesthetics, this is also a technical choice. Due to its density, bamboo is a challenging material to work with. Months of testing at JOA and with our partner Bambootouch were required to develop the right treatment. This ensures long-lasting durability without the need for constant maintenance.

That said, creativity is never off-limits! We often choose to add color to the metal elements of our designs. White, anthracite, blue the relatively neutral tone of bamboo allows it to pair beautifully with a wide range of colors, from subtle to bold.

4. Using bamboo, an environmental choice

Technically, bamboo is particularly well-suited for furniture, fittings, and stair construction. Studies show that it is:

  • 2.5 times more impact-resistant than oak
  • Better at handling tension and compression
  • More resistant to temperature and humidity variations, despite a lower density

In short, bamboo allows us to combine visual lightness and long-lasting strength, values that are central to JOA’s philosophy.

Ecologically the bamboo of our partner Bambootouch also has many virtues (**):

  • Its CO₂ absorption is 30% higher than that of broadleaf trees
  • Its rapid growth allows it to be harvested after only 5–7 years, compared with at least 25 years for a fast-growing species like chestnut
  • Bamboo is a grass; harvesting does not kill the plant. It regenerates naturally, helping to prevent deforestation. It also protects soils from erosion, floods, strong winds, and excessive sunlight
  • Bambootouch ensures excellent forest management in China. Only mature stalks are harvested, maintaining constant forest density. No pesticides, fungicides, clear-cutting, or clearing are used, protecting wildlife and undergrowth flora
  • Bamboo is endemic to China, where Bambootouch operates. This resource has been sustainably managed for centuries, unlike imported species exploited for timber

5. A reduced impact on the world

Some key figures on bamboo panel production:

  • 2.5 times less energy-intensive than oak (0.63 kWh of electricity + 1.7 liters of water per kilo of panel produced)
  • Full utilization of the cane—all cut residues are used as energy in production
  • Treatment via immersion in hydrogen-peroxide baths with no harmful residues (only water and oxygen!)

  • The glue used (2–3% of the panel) releases 87 times less formaldehyde than the strictest European standard (E1). All manufacturing waste—glue, oil, etc.—is fully recycled.
  • Contrary to popular belief, maritime transport of construction panels produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than road, rail, or air transport for the same quantity. Bamboo also allows us to use less material while achieving comparable technical performance.

These details matter both to us and to you.

This philosophy has been at the heart of JOA since day one. JOA is a kind of utopia: a desire to improve the world on our scale. We create comfort and beauty for you, helping you radiate positivity in your daily life.

Our small contribution: we strive every day to do good while minimizing our impact on the greater ecosystem we share.
