The Pano staircase with integrated storage for small spaces
For several years now, JOA has been designing layouts where storage plays a central role and staircases are no exception. The JOA range includes two models with integrated storage solutions, ideal for compact spaces. One of them, the Pano staircase, is perfect for small areas where maximizing storage is essential.
Originally designed to be installed between two walls, this staircase makes it possible to create practical storage areas like a closet or utility nook beneath it. Easy to install and comfortable despite its compact form, it stands out for its incline and offset solid wood steps.
Its reduced tread thickness makes it a compact model, perfect for steep configurations where every centimeter counts.
The Pano model also adapts beautifully to more monolithic designs. In modern interiors, where every bit of space is optimized to accommodate comfortable living, combining the Pano staircase with JOA’s Po system allows for an enhanced under-stair area with generous built-in storage in spaces that would otherwise be lost or difficult to use.

Integrated storage with Pivo, the other staircase model for small spaces
Recently, we faced a more complex challenge.
The space under the staircase was completely inaccessible. The two walls between which the staircase had to be installed were solid, leaving no possibility for lateral openings. Yet the clients needed to make the most of the under-stair area to store archives, clothing, and ski gear items that often have no designated place when there’s no basement!
We therefore proposed a simple staircase that perfectly met their specific needs. One of JOA’s two integrated-storage staircases, compact and ideal for small spaces, became the client’s preferred solution.
This is the true strength of JOA and its team of designers, led by Sébastien Boucquey, co-creator of the company and the mind behind the JOA projects. A unique challenge sparks creative thinking to devise a solution that is ergonomic, durable, and aesthetically harmonious with the existing architecture truly one-of-a-kind. Sébastien envisioned a staircase where the treads could open to reveal a wide, deep storage space beneath.
Pivo was born.
Two by two, the steps pivot. A small handle, precisely milled into the solid wood, allows you to easily lift the steps. A gravity-activated support leg deploys to hold the steps open while you organize the storage space beneath.
For a standard staircase height, it is entirely possible to create up to four storage compartments, all of practical and usable dimensions.
This is how a constraint becomes a clear advantage!
As an added bonus, the staircase is available in solid bamboo, including the interior storage compartments.
