An open riser staircase with JOA
Looking for inspiration for your future open riser staircase? Choosing the right type of staircase is no easy task. There are many criteria to consider before choosing the perfect staircase style.
An open riser staircase is becoming increasingly common. Its many advantages make it the ideal staircase for large open spaces, where taking charge of the aesthetics of your staircase takes on its full meaning. But that’s not all!
In this article, discover the many advantages of a riserless staircase and the different models developed and offered by JOA. All adapted to multiple configurations and promising an elegant, subtle design down to the smallest detail.
The advantages of an open riser staircase
More and more people are coming to us with a request for an open riser staircase. While some are still hesitant, others are convinced of the benefits of a riserless staircase. Let us tell you about the many advantages of this type of staircase.
-
Luminous
Its strength lies in its ability to preserve the maximum amount of light in the room. The fact that the structure is completely open allows light to pass between each step. It goes without saying that it is highly recommended in dark spaces to provide visibility, particularly under the staircase. Gone are the days of dark stairwells: light is brought in, with the added bonus of shadows that vary throughout the day.
-
Visually enlarges space
Having a staircase without risers not only saves space, it also reduces the visual impact of the staircase. Its minimal footprint naturally gives the impression of a larger, more open space. In a narrow corridor, for example, it minimizes the visual impact in the room and the impression of congested space.
-
Easy to maintain
Beyond its visual appeal, choosing an open riser staircase is also advantageous in terms of cleaning. The absence of a riser limits the number of nooks and crannies where dust can collect. But you also limit the shoe marks that can often be found on risers.
-
Silent
By eliminating risers, the structure of a staircase suddenly loses the resonance box it creates naturally. Noise is no longer amplified. What’s more, an open riser staircase eliminates the need for wood joints, thereby eliminating the risk of creaking.
-
Under staircase usable
Contrary to popular belief, a staircase without risers is just as suitable for integrating certain pieces of furniture in the sloping section. If the idea is always to bring in light, we’re more likely to propose furniture that isn’t too bulky. We can optimize this space by integrating a desk, TV cabinet, sideboard or other piece of furniture. At JOA, we like to create links between different elements. That’s why we tend to extend certain steps to create part of the furniture.
Choosing the right model of your riserless staircase
Now that you’re convinced that the open riser staircase is the model for you, let’s move on to the two possible staircase structures. The choice of structure is determined by your architecture and what it can do. It can be a freestanding staircase or a suspended staircase.
Once again, the structure will play a decisive role in the style and aesthetics of your staircase. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the models on offer.
-
Self-supporting staircase
Our freestanding riserless staircases can be either solid wood or a combination of wood and steel.
Our Libro models are ideal for small spaces. They are often used for ancillary rooms, such as mezzanines or studios. Our self-supporting staircases without risers are available in two different models.
These types of staircase optimize the space underneath, especially with a library corner. Their unique, warm design is reassuringly sturdy. They can be configured to suit the ideal layout of your interior, adding a dynamic, sophisticated touch to your space.
-
Suspended open riser staircase
If you’re looking for grandeur and lightness, a suspended open riser staircase is sure to win you over. Their airy structure gives them an elegant allure. The staircase sublimates the space while adding a dynamic effect thanks to the play of shadows created around the staircase. JOA offers two models of suspended riserless staircases. You’ll find the Up model and the Canva model. Although both feature solid wood treads and metal structures, they differ in design.
Staircase Up
You’ve probably already seen the Up staircase in our showroom or in our image gallery. It is composed of a metal stringer that attaches the steps to the wall, while large hangers are attached to the hopper.
They direct the eye and create a visual link between the two floors. The Up staircase is ideal for dark spaces. It maximizes the passage of light between the two floors, while the hangers act as railings. Depending on the amount of sunlight and the time of day, the shading becomes more pronounced, bringing your staircase to life with its natural relief.
Want to combine it with a piece of furniture? Nothing could be simpler! The Up open riser staircase can easily be combined with any piece of furniture, whatever its function. See more photos of our creations here.
Canva Staircase
While the design of the Up staircase stands out for its large verticals running perpendicular to the steps, the Canva staircase stands out for its large perforated sheet. Treated to a flat surface, this steel sheet structures the entire staircase from the hopper upwards. The open riser staircase is enhanced by the graphic play of this model.
It’s a staircase full of character, a real sculptural piece in your interior that reinforces the lively aspect of this often forgotten staircase.
This staircase is the preferred model for families with children who want to make their staircase as safe as possible. While the riserless staircase may worry some parents, this one has the advantage of being adaptable in terms of graphics. It’s up to you to decide on the spacing and density of the motif to make this your dream staircase.
