5 Dining room furniture ideas
A place of welcome and gathering, the dining room is a privileged place for guests and family. Most often used as a space for eating, it can however have several other less defined functions. Some use it as a work space, while others use it as an additional work surface for the kitchen.
Whatever its function, it is above all a gathering place where the little moments of everyday life take place.
Conviviality is at the heart of the dining room, and yet it sometimes lacks storage. After all, where there’s a work surface, there’s often an open space where we’re tempted to leave things we haven’t had time to put away. Similarly, if its configuration is not well established, your dining room can become a place of passage. A draught in which you don’t want to settle.
What dining room furniture for the perfect made-to-measure dining room?
Contrary to what you might think, dining room furniture doesn’t stop at a table and chairs. The sideboard, china cabinet, kitchen and seating area can all be directly linked to the smooth running of the dining area.
In concrete terms, it’s essential to take into account all the parameters of the dining room furniture and adjacent rooms to make it a warm and pleasant space to live in.
That’s why here are five dining room furniture ideas that can solve a number of recurring problems thanks to a design study like the one we offer. Inspiration for your next visit to our showroom to discuss your future made-to-measure dining room project.
The perfect shape of dining table
As we said earlier, a dining room table is the focal point of that area.
How do you choose the right table for your space? That’s the question on many minds. Because while initially you’ll opt for a simple, inexpensive table, and perhaps even get an old one, its shape and size can have an impact on how well your dining space functions.
If you’re planning to rethink your dining room, the first question is how many people you’d like to accommodate. Then, depending on the layout and the space available, you’ll choose a custom dining room table morphology that’s more conducive than another. At JOA, the study makes it possible to go beyond the standards found by the thousands on the Internet or in stores. Rather than having to choose between a round, oval or rectangular table, we start from the circulation of space. The idea is to optimize the passage and interface with the surrounding elements as much as possible. We then create a shape that we can design with the perfect proportions and forms for your dining room.
This table takes on a whole new meaning in the room. It harmonizes the shapes and circulation around it.
Awesome idea of dining room furniture : an intergrated table
In tight spaces, a dining table can sometimes be cumbersome. Certainly, extending the kitchen worktop is one solution. But not everyone enjoys eating on a high table. Nor do they want to be stuck with the layout to accommodate a few extra guests.
That’s why our designers have developed another way of integrating the custom-made dining table into the kitchen island, while retaining great flexibility. The idea is to be able to dissociate the table entirely if necessary. The table is incorporated directly into the body of the island up to a certain depth.
If they’re a couple, this made-to-measure dining table can be used daily with a size suited to their use. On the other hand, if they’re entertaining guests, they’re free to pull out to extend it to seat four. Alternatively, they can pull it out completely from the island, giving them all four corners of the table to seat six.
This retractable table therefore offers numerous possibilities, without restricting the space in any fixed way, while remaining homogeneous throughout the rest of the layout.

A made-to-measure bench to save space
In the same space-saving spirit – and yes, it’s a recurring request – positioning the dining room table close to a wall certainly saves precious centimetres.
The banquette is a very interesting alternative! Our ability to incorporate curves into your furnishings adds value to your bespoke dining room space, adding a touch of conviviality.
It is sometimes placed against a wall or, more often, in a corner to harmonize the space. It also has the great advantage of incorporating additional storage space underneath. If combined with the dining room table, it creates a real link and coherence for greater comfort and aesthetic appeal.
Our made-to-measure benches have the capacity to integrate a radiator into the body of the furniture. Equipped with grooves on the baseboards and on the bottom of the seat or backrest, heat can circulate while concealing its presence and clutter in the dining area. An idea not to be overlooked!
The advantage of a well-thought-out buffet for your dining room
We’re continuing our look at made-to-measure dining room furniture that could transform your space. After the seat and the table, the storage unit naturally follows in the composition of a dining room.
Depending on the household, the sideboard can have a variety of functions. Some use it as an everyday china cabinet. Others put everything they need for lunch within easy reach. But sometimes it’s used for board games, or as a place for pretty dishes for special occasions.
As you can see, there are as many uses as there are possible shapes and volumes, depending on content and use.
When designing a bespoke sideboard for a dining room, certain practical aspects can be carefully thought through to optimize space and ergonomics. In particular, by providing an easily accessible overview of the entire storage volume. Thanks to our sliding doors, you can access the entire contents.
Although large and capacious, the sideboard can also be treated horizontally and suspended to give it a light look. The fact that it is raised also means that often heavy contents can be accessed without having to stoop too low.
It can also accommodate additional functions, why not integrate a retractable side desk to free up the dining area? The possibilities are endless – just give us a challenge.

Custom-designed dining areas
Finally, we’d like to highlight the problems associated with large, open spaces. Although large, bright and free of traffic constraints, we often meet customers who want to delimit their dining area.
With no corners or partitions, this is an environment where privacy is in short supply. Hence our idea of using pendant lights to divide the dining area without closing off the space. The shelves create a lively atmosphere. This claustra alternative can be integrated directly into a piece of furniture or an architectural structure.
In our approach, we like to bring coherence between the different elements of the room. The overall design of the room will always have more meaning and harmony than the creation of one piece of furniture among many others. However, depending on the project, they can already have a significant impact on the living environment.
