Built-in bookcase staircase and custom-made railing Up - Wood and steel

The staircase, a central feature of your home

An architectural staircase

More and more, interior design is focused on open spaces. This results in the need to integrate staircases into the atmosphere of multi-storey houses, duplexes and triplexes. The staircase becomes a central piece of the design. Lightweight, practical and integrated are the recurring demands of our customers.

At JOA, we think of the staircase as the piece of character that will set the tone of your interior. The space is exploited to the maximum. An architectural staircase with a perfect integration highlights the original character of the room.

In the old, the moldings are highlighted and protected, the slightest feature of the place is integrated. We don’t just come and stand in front of it. The example highlighted in this article is a perfect reflection of that. A curved alcove, recessed ceilings, moldings, everything was taken into consideration by the JOA designers to create this staircase.

The JOA Up model

The JOA Up staircase is the flagship model of the JOA range and is also very versatile. It can be adapted to several situations: straight, quarter-turn, double quarter-turn, with walkway, with or without railing on the floor.

It adapts to the architecture and allows to sublimate it. Light and suspended, it is made of noble and durable materials. Solid wood (oak or bamboo) and steel ensure resistance to any test, while remaining light.

Its system, designed by Sébastien Boucquey, is based on a suspended principle. Thin steel stringers fixed along the wall ensure the stability of the steps, while the long steel hangers secure the whole. The 40mm solid steps are much thinner and lighter than a floating staircase. However, no risers are needed. Our customers are always surprised the first time they climb a JOA staircase; the steps are very stable and do not move, either when going up or down the stairs.

A multifunctional staircase

An integral part of interior design, the staircase must be adaptable to the needs of its users. Whether in large spaces or smaller ones, where every square meter counts, the staircase can have several functions. Our objective will be to bring a good ergonomics to each function: desk, sideboard, bench, TV cabinet or as here library etc…

Imagined with the Brussels architecture studio Ella, this steel bookcase sublimates the Up staircase. Starting from a really particular architecture with this large, recessed alcove that the clients absolutely wanted to keep, not without reason, it posed however the technical challenge of fixing it to the wall of the staircase.

A simple solution would have been to produce a very thick self-supporting stringer that would completely block this alcove. This solution would have been unsightly and would have taken away the function of the alcove. In keeping with our desire to offer projects that are integrated into the architecture, the idea of integrating a library was born with the project’s architects. In addition to giving a real function to the alcove, it also made it possible to offset the stringboard while ensuring a solid means of fixation.

An architectural success

The resulting project sublimates the room. The solid oak of the steps echoes the parquet floor, the light steel ensemble creates a play of shadows that evolves with the hours of the day and the seasons. The colored books brought an additional pep and a soul to the whole.

That’s the power of custom design! Thanks again to Ella Studio for their trust.
