The 3 essentials of JOA custom kitchen design

When looking for a new made-to-measure kitchen, it’s easy to see that the styles and solutions proposed are sometimes redundant. Indeed, many kitchen designers tend to reproduce the same general configurations with different nuances in materials and options.

At JOA, we prefer to enhance the uniqueness of your architecture by offering you a kitchen in keeping with the place and its use. Here’s a made-to-measure kitchen project that will make you realize the added value of this project and its advantages thanks to our approach.

Circulation-inducing shapes

As those who already know us will know, traffic has always been an integral part of our thinking. We always start with the architecture of the space in order to propose a tailor-made kitchen layout that is consistent with the location. Once we have a general plan, we can study the circulation in the space and understand the important issues.

As part of this renovation project, the customers expressed the wish to open up the living space to gain in luminosity and fluidity between the different rooms. Initially, the kitchen was confined to an adjoining room, albeit with a glass roof at the rear.

On the basis of the new plans proposed by the architects, our designers were able to carry out a study of the custom-made kitchen layout to establish its ideal morphology.

This top view shows the benefits of a triangular island. The triangular island creates circulation and movement within the kitchen, without compromising the flow of traffic. In fact, this shape preserves the volume of the central island, thanks to integrated storage and seating. What’s more, it allows easy access from the dining room to the back rooms. Where a cubic and rectangular shape would have limited and frozen the kitchen, the triangle, with its rounded corners, naturally facilitates circulation.

What about the fridge unit’s angled return? Yes, a simple straight line was possible. In fact, many kitchen designers would have suggested it. This slanting line has its place in the overall dynamic of custom kitchen design. Here, it limits the kitchen space by encompassing it. The slant breaks up the corridor effect of this large unit, making it easy to forget that a wall return initially delimits the space.

Optimized ergonomics for customized kitchen design

When designing this kitchen, the aim was to create a place for sharing where functionality is optimized to the maximum.

A number of constraints had to be taken into account, including maximizing the light from the glass roof, integrating and concealing the boiler located just in front of the glass roof, and providing clever spaces for small appliances.

The glass roof acts as a pantry and utility room, and is entirely linked to the use and aesthetics of the kitchen. That’s why the furniture goes around it without ever obstructing the light or passage.

The boiler, meanwhile, is integrated by a column on the left-hand side that blends into the overall layout. It is always accessible through a door, and the space below is enhanced by a niche for storage.

And last but not least, we’ve thought about how to integrate everyday appliances without cluttering up the worktop. A shelf extension on the window sill of the skylight allows you to place the kettle on it, keeping it close at hand.

Another ingenious idea in this bespoke kitchen design was to create a small, suspended, open cabinet to hold the appliances used every day. They remain easily accessible, and can be used to store books or more decorative objects, adding life to the space.

All these subtleties are an integral part of the overall design and add real value to the everyday use of the kitchen. The essentials are brought to the fore without distorting the kitchen’s pure style.

A warm, timeless style

As part of this renovation project, the design of a made-to-measure kitchen was quickly accompanied by a strong choice of style. At JOA, we believe that a kitchen should reflect the personality of its occupants while enhancing their interior.

We attach great importance to the timelessness of our creations. Rather than giving in to ephemeral trends, we favor long-lasting lines, designed to appeal today as well as in ten years’ time. Our designers have created a singular style, far removed from the standards of classic kitchen manufacturers, thanks to in-depth research into shapes and materials.

In this kitchen, the marriage of solid wood and white powder-coated steel creates an atmosphere that’s both friendly and bright. The subtle contrast between the white fronts and the ribbon of wood framing the wall structures the space with elegance. The central island, clad entirely in solid wood, is the centerpiece: rich in form, it surprises from every angle. Alternating full and empty volumes, it brings a unique dynamic and sculptural relief to the whole.

Suspended above, a bespoke light fixture, designed and produced by us, emphasizes the shape of the island. Light and airy, it completes the layout with precision, while reinforcing the kitchen’s visual identity.

Conclusion: a custom kitchen designed to last, live and surprise

This project is a perfect illustration of our approach to bespoke design: to create a bespoke kitchen layout that embraces the existing architecture, adapts to the daily lives of its users and retains a timeless elegance. Every design decision – from the shape of the island to the discreet integration of technical constraints – responds to a logic of use, harmony and durability.

At JOA, we believe that every space deserves special attention, a singular vision and uncompromising execution. It’s this demand that gives rise to unique kitchens, designed to stand the test of time with equal ease.
